Can You Live Without The Internet?

Topics: Miscellaneous

That is not a question you think of when everything is working out alright. Not when you can get up in the morning and start work as soon as you are ready.

However, this is a question you are forced to face the moment your net dies on you. In my case it was my phone line. Since I have a DSL connection, that is pretty much the same thing. What makes matters worse is the company I have my phone line and DSL connection from chose this very moment to be a chaotic mess. In other words, I cannot get someone to get my phone line and DSL connection back up.

Three full days without the Internet. Let me tell you it wasn’t fun. It is sad but I cannot remember what I used to do in the pre-Internet era. How did I spend my day? How did I pass my time?

Since I work from home and all my work is Internet related, my entire work world revolves around having a stable Internet connection. So living without the Internet wasn’t very pleasant.

Anyway the good news is I now have a wireless connection so no more dependency on the phone line. And that feels great! It is good to be back :)

So what do you think your life will be like if you lost your Internet connection for three days?

  1. Not having either the internet or phone service must be like being confined in solitary isolation.

However, I find there is a lot of stuff that I want to read more about or look into but never find the time. If you print out stuff related to your business to read, that would be a good use of internet down time.

  2. Thankfully I do have another telephone line so I wasn’t completely cut off from the world. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have DSL support so couldn’t switch my Internet connection to that.

I did catch up on a bit of reading. But I’m so used to just turning on Google and searching for stuff I come accross. It was quite frustrating not being able to do that.

Of course it has set me back a few more days on a project I was hoping to have finished and launched this week. There was no working offline on that.

I had 6 days off my DSL due to dead telephone line. Those were the dead days. The argument of my fellows how you can live alone for more than a year…it is impossible, you must consult a phychatist. and i just used to laugh at them, “what do you know of internet and livelihood based on internet” and ” i am too busy to meet you, as i have lot of assignments”

But those 6 six days made them absolutely right. Since then i am trying to keep a backup!

  4. I have learnt my lesson, too. From now on I am going to have a back up internet service. Of course if both go off at the same time, then I must be just jinxed ;-)

i really can not imagine to live without the internet.
i think that the internet is the most important media in this century

  6. Always have a backup. I have a dialup modem on standby, and I can pimp of my neighbour’s wireless in a pinch.

Also, you can head to a ‘net cafe. Might be worth downloading a virtual-keyboard software onto their computers, so you can input passwords safely.

  7. Oh yah, I have learnt my lesson and have a back-up service now :)
