WordPress – Auto Upgrading Plugins: Could not create directory. /public_html

posted Monday, January 3rd, 2011

WordPress has had this most useful feature of upgrading plugins automatically, from within WordPress, for a while. Just one click and you are done.

However there are times you might run into an error and get this error instead:

Could not create directory. /public_html

This can have you banging your head against cyber walls for a long time. The solution, however, is very simple.

Here is what you need to do:

  • Use FTP or your Cpanel’s File Manager to browse to this directory: public_html/wp-content/upgrade
  • Delete this directory.
  • Make a new folder and name it: upgrade
  • Set permissions as 777

You should be able to upgrade your plugins automatically, from within WordPress, after this change.

I installed word press using fantastico under cpanel and the deleting and remaking of the upgrade folder with 777 permissions seemed to work for me too.
